Veterans’ Advisory Council Meeting

Friday 31 July, 2015

A Veterans’ Advisory Council (VAC) meeting was held on Thursday, 30 July, 2015.

Anzac Centenary Memorial Garden Walk

The Director of Veterans SA, Rob Manton briefed the VAC about the latest design options being considered for the Anzac Centenary Memorial Garden Walk on Kintore Avenue.  The VAC was presented with an overview of the project along with some of the landscaping options being considered in the development of the project.  Mr Manton also spoke about the project’s Public Works Committee Hearing, the Ex-Service Organisations Briefing and the upcoming External Stakeholder Briefing.

Australasian Soldiers Dardanelles Cenotaph

The VAC considered a suggestion by VAC member Leon Eddy, to relocate the Australasian Soldiers Dardanelles Cenotaph, South Terrace to the Northern entrance of the Anzac Centenary Memorial Garden Walk.  The Cenotaph is the first known significant memorial dedicated to the Australians and New Zealanders lost at Gallipoli.  This is evidenced by the use of the term Dardanelles rather than Gallipoli and Australasian rather than ANZAC.

This year will mark the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Cenotaph on 7 September, 1915.  The memorial was moved from its original location, Cohen Avenue in the South Parklands, in October 1940 to its current position in Lundie Gardens (Western end of South Terrace).

The VAC supported the proposal to relocate the Cenotaph to the Anzac Centenary Memorial Garden Walk.  This will now be subject to the necessary Adelaide City Council processes to consider such a relocation.

Future Use of the Repatriation General Hospital Site

A Registration of Interest process to identify alternate uses for the Repatriation General Hospital site closed on Friday 22 May 2015. 30 registrations were received, mainly from health, aged care, education providers and community organisations.

The VAC has established a sub-committee to consider the advice it will provide to the State Government about how the Chapel, Museum and Remembrance Garden will be managed and maintained into the future.

Transforming Health

The VAC considered information it received from the South Australian Centre of Excellence for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Panel.

The VAC expressed its support for the process the South Australian Centre of Excellence for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Panel has undertaken to determine the model of care and recommending a location for the future Post Traumatic Stress Centre for Excellence and acknowledged it leadership on this issue.
