This week… Remembering Korea and… Applications open this week for AVCAT Scholarships and Bursaries
JOAN HUGHES: AUSTRALIAN VETERAN’S CHILDRENS ASSISTANCE TRUST – APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN!
“It has long been known that children of veterans tend to experience greater financial disadvantage and are less likely to complete post-secondary education than the general population.” Said Dr Anthony Rengel (a past recipient of an AVCAT Scholarship) in a moving speech at the WA Australian Air Force Cadets Reunion.
Joan Hughes, CEO of AVCAT, joins us to talk about how completing tertiary education helps to break the cycle of disadvantage experienced by many children of Veterans. AVCAT is a national independent charity that manages tertiary scholarships and bursaries for the children and grandchildren of Ex-Service men and women, sponsored by the Australian Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs (Long Tan Bursary), Ex-service organisations, corporate sponsors, community groups and individual donors. Applications opened on 18.08.19! Joan encourages everyone to get their applications in now!
JIM STEVENS KOREAN WAR VETERAN: KOREA WITH 2RAR
Jim went through some tough times even before he got to Korea. He was badly injured in a training accident and given 3 months to live. However, he ended up in Korea and was wounded at the ‘Hook’, but his biggest disappointment was coming home from Korea, and despite being in uniform and wearing his medals, he wasn’t welcomed. Jim tells us about all of this, including his early training, and life in Korea with 2RAR, reinforcements for 3RAR.
