The Royal Australian Air Force and the Royal Australian Air Force Association (SA Division) will be holding a Victory in the Pacific Ceremony on Thursday 15 August 2019 at the Air Force Memorial, Torrens Parade Ground.
Between December 1941 and August 1945, the RAAF fought sustained battles and campaigns across the broader Asia-Pacific in the war against Japan. From the tropical jungles of India and Burma in the west, to the islands of the Southwest Pacific in the east, to the Philippines in the north to patrolling the southern sea lanes to Australia’s south, the RAAF conducted operations of all types.
Developing itself from a small and immature air force equipped with obsolete aircraft in 1939, the RAAF became the fourth largest in the world with over 6,000 aircraft in total and 21,000 personnel in the 1st Tactical Air Force, its primary operational formation in the Pacific.
The RAAF contribution was critical to the defence of Australia and instrumental in the defeat of Japan. Names such as Malaya, Singapore, Papua, Guinea, Bismarck Sea, Milne Bay, the Bombing of Darwin, the OBOE offensives and the Netherlands East Indies are synonymous with RAAF courage and sacrifice. The cost was high with around 2,000 RAAF personnel killed, injured or captured.
As we prepare for the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific in 2020, this ceremony will acknowledge the service and sacrifice of those RAAF personnel who fought in the Pacific during World War 2.
The Service will commence at 11am.
Medals/Decorations may be worn. Three wreaths will be laid on behalf of the people of South Australia and the Royal Australian Air Force.
The RAAF Association (South Australia) will be hosting a morning tea for attendees in the Torrens Parade Ground Combined Service’s Mess immediately following the ceremony.
Free parking will be available at Torrens Parade Ground for those attending the service.
