Having a roof over your head, whether your own home or a rental, is essential to maintaining a stable life and incredibly important for the security of a family unit. Facing the possibility of homelessness is a daunting and frightening situation for anyone. For our veterans, it is a very real and current issue with an estimated 5,800 veterans either homeless or at risk of homelessness nationally in 2018.

Money is probably one of the greatest causes of stress and tension for most of us and can have a significant impact on our relationships and quality of life particularly if we are living in a world of debt. Mortgage stress accounts for a large proportion of our financial woes as we spend a significant amount on repayments and associated costs involved with buying a home. Add to this the cost of living and the stagnant wages environment, rising costs of electricity, fuel and other necessities and you can soon find yourself in what can seem to be a hopeless cycle.

Each of us is only one or two poor decisions away from a criminal conviction and potentially jail time and it is an unfortunate fact that some of our veterans have spent time in prison or are currently undergoing a custodial sentence. There are approximately 95 veterans currently in custody in South Australian prisons according to a report written by former infantry soldier and now corrections officer, Chris Tilley.

When the stress of daily life gets on top of you it’s time for a break and that’s just what the Hub can provide for Veterans and their families affected by the impact of PTS and other service related injuries. One of our key contacts is a respite program known as Robe to Recovery that, as its name suggests, is located in Robe in the state’s South East.

Over the past 18 months the Hub has been connecting with organisations that provide various support services to veterans and their families. Of particular note is one program that focusses on employment transition for current and former serving ADF members that goes by the name of “StoryRight”. Read more...

The Partnerships Hub, Jamie Larcombe Centre, has gone from strength to strength over the past 15 months with more than 2,500 visits, more than 50% of which were from veterans and family members. We have received incredible support from the veteran community and the organisations and individuals who support them, which has led to some great improvements in the facility and resources we provide.
