David’s story is quite an extraordinary one of a Mitcham boy who desperately wanted to fly Spitfires and Hurricanes – and became instead a decorated bomber pilot and master bomber in the elite Pathfinder Force. He flew 68 operations over Europe, and was promoted to Squadron Leader at the age of just 19. It’s the story of Lewis David Leicester … better known as David Leicester, DFC and Bar.
David’s story was collected as part of a oral history community project called World War II in Words where South Australian World War Two veterans shared their stories in their own words.
