Each year, the Australian Federal and State Governments allocate grant funding to support projects and initiatives that commemorate the involvement of all men and women who have served and assist organisations that provide support and services to veterans and their families.
State Grant Funding
Veterans SA administers a number of grant programs each year on behalf of the South Australian government. These programs aim to commemorate the service and sacrifice of the South Australian men and women who have served in the Australian Defence Force, as well as help ex-service organisations improve their governance and strengthen their capacity building skills.

The Veterans SA Commemorative Services Grant Fund offers support to eligible ex-service organisations to assist in hosting commemorative events. Funding can be used for expenses that directly relate to the coordination, management and delivery of commemorative services within South Australia.

The Veterans SA Capacity Building Grant Fund offers support to eligible ex-service organisations to help them improve their governance and strengthen their capacity building skills. Funding can be used to support projects that help strengthen the governance of ex-service organisations to lead, develop, support and advocate for their communities.

The Anzac Day Commemoration Fund provides $100,000 each year to support projects that commemorate our military history, foster public understanding of its significance, and benefit the veteran community. This may include events, exhibitions, research, community education activities or the restoration of memorials.

The 80th Anniversary of the end of World War II Grant Fund has been established to offer eligible South Australian organisations support for activities that honour and recognise the sacrifices and contributions made by South Australians during World War II.
Other Grant Opportunities
There are a range of grants and scholarships available to support the veteran community, covering everything from commemoration and wellbeing to education, advocacy, and financial support for veterans and their families.
The Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants aims to preserve Australia’s wartime heritage and engage communities nationwide in projects that highlight the service and sacrifice of Australian service personnel. Projects should promote appreciation and understanding of service experiences and the role of those who served in shaping the nation. There are two categories of grants available, Community Grants which offer grants of up to $10,000 and Major Grants to support initiatives between $10,001 and $150,000.
The Building Excellence in Support and Training (BEST) Grants offered by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs support ex service organisations in delivering advocacy services to the veteran and Defence communities. These grants enhance the capacity of organisations to provide high quality support and training for veterans and their families. BEST Program grants contribute towards the costs of delivering advocacy services, including staffing, training and administration.
AVCAT scholarships support eligible children and grandchildren of Australian ex serving veterans to pursue tertiary education. Scholarships are valued between $4,000 and $6,000 per year for up to three years of full time study. Applicants must be enrolled or planning to enrol in a full time course of at least one academic year at a university, TAFE or RTO. They must also be an Australian citizen or permanent resident or the child, stepchild, foster child, or grandchild of a veteran.
The Long Tan Bursary helps eligible children and grandchildren of Vietnam veterans with the cost of tertiary education. Each year 37 bursaries are awarded to successful applicants across Australia. Each bursary is worth up to $12,000 over three years of continuous full-time study. Australian Veterans’ Children Assistance Trust administers the Long Tan Bursary scheme on behalf of Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
The Grants in Aid (GIA) Program offered by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs supports ex service organisations (ESOs) to provide coordinating and representational support for the veteran and Defence community. Open to ESOs by invitation, the grant encourages cooperation and communication between the veteran community, ex service organisations, and the Australian Government, helping improve services through collaboration. A total funding allocation of $145,000 per year is available through the GIA program.
