The ANZAC Day Commemoration Act 2005 was established to ensure the continued commemoration of ANZAC Day as a day of national significance in South Australia.
The object of the Act is to ensure that the contribution of all people who have served Australia in time of war, armed conflict or international peace‑keeping operations is recognised and commemorated in South Australia.
The Act encompasses the regulation of public sports and entertainment on ANZAC Day and the application of the ANZAC Day Commemoration Fund.
Regulation of public sports and entertainment on ANZAC Day
Under the Act, public sporting and entertainment events are restricted between 5.00 am and 12.00 pm (midday) on 25 April each year.
An event is restricted if tickets for admission are required and they are:
- available for purchase by a member of the public before the event or activity
- required for entry to the event or activity.
The intent is not to limit community participation in recreation and sport. Regular community sporting events, junior sport and recreational venues (eg. gyms, courts, golf courses) may operate as usual.
If ANZAC Day falls on a weekend (Saturday or Sunday), events are more likely to coincide with restricted hours. Organisations are encouraged to consider the significance of ANZAC Day when planning any activities and consider scheduling activities after midday where suitable.
Seeking an exemption
If an organisation intends to hold a public sporting or entertainment event during restricted hours (5.00 am–12.00 pm) where tickets are required for admission, an exemption is required.

ANZAC Day Commemoration Fund
The Anzac Day Commemoration Act 2005 also established the ANZAC Day Commemoration Fund.
Administered by Veterans SA, the annual grant program provides $100,000 in funding each year to support projects that commemorate our nation’s military history, foster public understanding of its significance and benefit the veteran community. This may include events, exhibitions, research, community education activities or the restoration of memorials.
