Since June 1916, the Returned and Services League (RSL) of Australia has been the driving force behind Anzac Day dawn services and other commemorative activities. This flagship ex-services organisation has been providing support to members, both past and present, of the Australian Defence Forces and their families since 1916.
The formation of the RSL was a result of the camaraderie, concern and mateship shown by the “Diggers” for the welfare of their mates during and after the First World War. And that philosophy continues today. This year, just like the past 99 years, Returned and Services Leagues all over the country will host Anzac Day services, marches and commemorations.
In South Australia on 25 April, buglers will sound the Last Post, wreaths will be laid and the ‘Ode’ will be recited at more than 150 ceremonies across the State.
The First World War is a pivotal Australian historical event, however, on Anzac Day, not only do we honour those who made the supreme sacrifice at Gallipoli and the Western Front, but we remember all of the courageous men and women whose service and sacrifice in all wars, conflicts and peace operations ensured the preservation the Australian life we enjoy today.
We also call to mind all those wounded and who live with the impact of these wounds both physical and psychological. We think of their families and carers who support them over many years.
The annual Anzac commemorations are a driving force in ensuring the Anzac spirit continues, and all South Australians are encouraged to attend their local service held at the local war memorial/s in your town or city. Most services commence from 6am but many start earlier and some later.
