Vale Sidney (Sid) Louis Ey

Thursday 26 September, 2019

It is with sadness we advise that Mr Sidney Louis (Sid) Ey (SX6653) passed away on Wednesday 25 September 2019.  Sid turned 103 on 31 May 2019.

The thoughts of the veteran community are with Sid’s family and friends at the Gawler RSL Sub Branch at this difficult time.

Sid enlisted in the Australian Army at Wayville on 24 June 1940. He served with the 2nd/8th Field Ambulance in North Africa from 1941 until 1942 at El Alamein and during the siege of Tobruk.  Sid saw further service with the 2nd/8th in the South West Pacific, particularly in Borneo, which helped to turn the tide of war against the Japanese and to prevent the possibility of a Japanese invasion.

Sid was part of the greatest generation Australia has ever produced.  He was born in Gawler during World War I, survived the aftermath of that war and the Great Depression, and then served his country in a war that claimed more than 39,000 Australian servicemen and women.

Sid was married to Beryl on 2 August 1947 and enjoyed 70 years of marriage until Beryl’s passing on 12 August 2017.  Sid and Beryl ran the Willaston BP Service Station and fodder store before Sid went into ‘semi-retirement’ when he handed over the reins to eldest son Ross and wife Barbara, aged 83.

Sid enjoyed attending the Gawler RSL Sub Branch into his 103rd year and will be sorely missed by the local Gawler community.  Sid is survived by his two sons, Ross and John, and their families.

Lest we forget.
