SUPPORTING LOCAL COMMUNITIES TO REMEMBER OUR SERVICE PERSONNEL

Memorials, commemorative sites and activities aimed at preserving our military history will be funded right across Australia as part of the latest round of Saluting Their Service (STS) grants announced today.

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester said the grants would support communities in recognising local Australian Defence Force service, with a wide variety of projects being funded, including activities to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

“A community’s military history, through those who have served or continue to serve, is a key part of its identity and by involving community groups such as our ex-service organisations we can ensure this history is never forgotten,” Mr Chester said.

“As we approach the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War on 15 August, it is encouraging to see organisations being awarded funding to help recognise this important commemorative anniversary for our nation in their local community.”

“Chances are we all know someone who has served our nation, whether a family member, friend or even the next door neighbour, and for those in the community commemorating the end of the Second World War, I encourage you to involve the living veterans of this conflict where possible.

“For those organisations seeking to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in August, I also encourage you to apply for funding in the next round of Saluting Their Service grants.”

The STS grants are designed to preserve the nation’s wartime heritage and highlight the service and sacrifice of Australia’s service men and women in wars, conflicts and peace operations.  Organisations can submit your application now for the next funding round, which closes on 31 March 2020. To apply or find out more visit the Saluting Their Service Commemoration Program page on the Community Grants Hub.
