Veterans’ Families Day was established by the South Australian Government in 2024 as a nation‑first annual day of recognition for the families of current and former Australian Defence Force (ADF) members.
Recognising those who serve alongside our veterans
First observed on 15 May 2024, the day acknowledges that military service is not undertaken alone. Families play a key role in supporting service members through deployments, relocations, separation and the ongoing impacts of military life, reinforcing that no one serves alone.
By formally recognising 15 May each year as Veterans’ Families Day, South Australia became the first jurisdiction in Australia to acknowledge the contribution and lived experience of veterans’ families. The day also aligns with the International Day of Families and National Families week in Australia.
Why this day matters
ADF families provide the foundation that supports service, often managing long periods of separation, frequent disruption and change, as well as challenges that can continue after service ends.
Veterans’ Families Day recognises the strength and commitment of partners, children, parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, best friends and carers, and acknowledges families who have lost loved ones through service.
How the day is recognised
Veterans’ Families Day is marked each year through community recognition including events, messages of appreciation, and opportunities for connection.
The day is listed on the Commemorations Calendar as an officially recognised day of significance in South Australia.
