A forward focus on strategic long term plans and governance
The South Australian Veterans Advisory Council (VAC) met on 11 June, 2020 to discuss a range of issues impacting on, and relevant to, South Australians who have served and their families.
The focus of the meeting was on two strategic matters of importance: a preliminary briefing on the concept masterplan for the Torrens Training Depot; and the employment challenges that exist for those who have left the ADF, and for the families of current and former serving members.
VAC members were given an introductory insight into the Torrens Precinct Master Plan and initial discussions explored ways the site could be developed to benefit future generations of veterans. A VAC sub-committee has been established to provide further input into these plans as they are developed. There will also be an opportunity for wider community consultation in the coming months.
In addition to standing business, the council also heard from Ms Erma Ranieri, Commissioner for Public Sector Employment, who spoke about good governance for government boards and committees and identified opportunities to partner with the VAC for ongoing professional development.
This formed part of further discussions surrounding the VAC’s strategic, long term focus and how the VAC can best represent, and advocate for, those who have served and their families in South Australia.
The VAC meet bi-monthly and discusses issues and concerns relevant to veterans and their families in South Australia. To that end a direct line of communication to the council has been set up for the veteran community and the public to communicate with the VAC to ensure the community can have their opinions and concerns on state based issues heard.
