Bublacowie Military Museum and Memorial Park
Yorketown, South Australia 5576
Chris Soar - Museum Director/Curator on 0419 853 294
If you are travelling to Yorke Peninsula and have an interest in Military history then you must make time to visit this gem of a Museum at Bublacowie.
Curated by Chris Soar BM, a veteran of Malaya and Vietnam, Chris has a passion for military history that has seen him acquire a superb collection of objects, memorabilia and other military ephemera that extends across all conflicts and peace-keeping operations in which Australian Defence Forces have been involved.
At Bublacowie Military Museum and Memorial Park, you’ll find military medals, uniforms and memorabilia of all types and scales. Not only does the collection include personal photographs and belongings of local servicemen and servicewomen form Yorke Peninsula (mostly donated to the Museum), it also includes a memorial park and fully restored Bublacowie School House. There is also a series of fascinating indoor and outdoor displays that can be explored within the grounds of the museum.
This privately owned and managed, award winning museum, was built and curated by Chris Soar BM. Chris and his late wife Enid re-located from Adelaide to Yorke Peninsula over a decade ago. They established the museum with the aim of “keeping alive the memories of the sacrifices made by so many, and to help young people learn about our military history.”
The Museum has gone from strength to strength, expanding year by year as the collection grows. The latest additions include two ship containers that have been cleverly converted into display rooms.
The Museum is set on two acres of native trees and shrubs – an oasis in the midst of the very rich wheat and barley growing area of the Yorke Peninsula. It takes approximately 2 and half hours to reach Bublacowie from Adelaide, and Yorke Town is just another 14km down the road.
There is plenty to see, and it would be wise to set aside at least an hour (preferably two) to fully enjoy the grounds and buildings of the museum.
Admission for adults is $8 and kids are FREE. There is a shop, parking and light refreshments available on site. Plus, the resident ducks, guinea fowl, fan-tailed pigeons, and two very special peacocks wander freely in this delightful setting.
