RAAF Edinburgh STEM Day and Air Show

Friday 08 - Sunday 10 November, 2019

The Royal Australian Air Force is hosting a three-day Air Show from 8 to 10 November 2019 at RAAF Base Edinburgh. The Air Show will be the first at Edinburgh for 12 years. The theme of the event is ‘Vimy to Fifth Generation in 100 Years’ with 2019 being the Centenary of the historic England-Australia Air Race won by Adelaide brothers Sir Ross and Sir Keith Smith in their WW1-vintage Vickers VIMY Bomber in 1919.

The event will encompass a schools STEM day on Friday 8 November, followed by a two-day public Air Show over the weekend.

Building on the recent success of STEM focused interactive experiences held at the Avalon Air Show and the Formula One Grand Prix, Air Force is inviting interested South Australian academic and industry partners to collaborate in the delivery of a STEM focused, hands-on interactive series of displays. The experience is aimed at students from years 8, 9 and 10 and will focus on creating interest in aerospace careers. The ‘Schools STEM Day’ will involve 500 students and 150 Air Force, Navy and Army Cadets and will be a ‘scripted’ experience. At this stage we are pleased to have nine Prime defence companies participating in the STEM activity.

Complementing the STEM Day experience will be the flying displays conducted as morning and afternoon sessions. The morning session will be focused on vintage/heritage aircraft that have a connection to Air Force and/or RAAF Base Edinburgh. The afternoon session will be focused on the current Defence aviation fleet, especially those that form part of the fifth-generation Air Force.

On Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th the event will be open to the public. There will be additional static displays presenting Australian Defence Force aviation and other capabilities, particularly those based in the Adelaide area, showcasing the diversity of Defence and commercial aviation and space careers.

The official launch will occur on 28 June. Tickets will go on sale on 1 July. There is an opportunity to buy grand stand tickets and tickets to a fully catered enclosure (The Vimy Club) but the numbers are very limited so be sure to get in quick!
