Timor Leste 20th Anniversary Celebrations for UNAMET & INTERFET Missions
Wednesday 28 August - Friday 20 September, 2019
The Timor-Leste Government will be hosting 20th anniversary ceremonies for UNAMET (28-30 August 19) and INTERFET (18-20 September) missions. Key dates and key ceremonies will be on 30 Aug (date of Popular Consultation/Referendum) and 20 Sep 19 (INTERFET intervention). Other ceremonies and events will occur in the preceding days.
Timor-Leste will be hosting the events to honour international military and police veterans and their families as well as the journalists, humanitarian volunteers, electoral officials, entertainers and others who supported in securing peace and stability in Timor-Leste. The Timor-Leste Government will host at least 2 major events for INTERFET and UNAMET. It is likely that there will be an official welcome reception, a remembrance ceremony and a freedom of the city type march.
It is expected different countries, associations and missions will host their own events, functions, tours, commemorations etc.
Initiative from individuals within units/associations/deployments etc. is encouraged. Some unit associations have already planned tours prior to and after the major events including visits to Oecusse, Bobonaro, Suai, central highlands, and as far East as Baucau and Viqueque districts. All rural locations have accommodation now, though some places are limited. Some good ideas already underway by some associations: commence research about common accommodation in Dili and outside, seeking transport options for tours, commemoration plaques to dedicate whilst in country, banners for march and other ceremonies. This is a great opportunity to get together, celebrate the success of this mission and check in on each other.
