South Australians are being encouraged to recognise the strength, sacrifice and contributions of war widows and widowers this War Widows Day.

Observed annually on 19 October, the day honours those who have experienced the loss of a spouse or partner through service in the Australian Defence Force.

The day acknowledges the enduring contribution of war widows and widowers, who continue to support their families and strengthen their communities, while preserving the legacies of their loved ones.

War Widows Day is held on the birthday of Mrs Jessie Vasey CBE, who founded the movement that became the War Widows’ Guild of Australia after her husband, Major General George Vasey, died in an aircraft crash in March 1945.

Through her wartime work and her own experience of loss, Mrs Vasey brought war widows together and advocated for greater recognition, support and improved living conditions.

Following similar declarations in New South Wales and Queensland, War Widows Day was first commemorated in South Australia in 2023 following advocacy from Australian War Widows (SA) Inc., which is now part of the Families of Veterans Guild.

Since 2024, War Widows Day has become a national day observance.

Quotes attributable to Chris Picton

Today, South Australians honour the war widows and widowers whose lives have been forever changed by the loss of a loved one through service to our nation.

This day is a reminder that the impact of military service extends beyond those who serve, touching spouses, families and entire communities.

I extend my profound respect and gratitude to every war widow and widower for the sacrifice they have endured and the legacy they carry on.
