Military service has changed drastically since Australia’s earliest military contributions, where hundreds of thousands of men and women were committed to the cause of defending our country and supporting our allies against enemy forces.
Today, the contributions of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) are much more diverse. ADF service may involve deployment at home or abroad, peacekeeping and humanitarian work, disaster relief and emergency support. The ADF also facilitates incredible learning opportunities for civilians in schools, workplaces and communities across the country.
Regardless of where our service people are located, or what they are doing, they are contributing to the defence, safety and welfare of our country and making a difference in the lives of ordinary people every day.

Education
Soldiers from the 3rd Combat Engineer Regiment (3CER) visited a local school in Townsville during Science Week 2022. Students were provided with a hands-on experience with equipment, first aid training, explosive detector dog scenarios and how 3CER use science in their roles.
Humanitarian
ADF personnel from the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) recently deployed aboard the U.S. Navy’s Military Sealift Command hospital ship USNS Percy as part of Pacific Partnership 2022, the largest annual multilateral humanitarian assistance and disaster relief preparedness mission conducted in the IndoPacific region. RAN and RAAF specialists provided essential medical and dental services to the community, as well as training seminars to medical professionals within the region.
Disaster Relief
Following a severe weather event that included dangerous storm cells that impacted the Logan, Gold Coast and Scenic Rim local government areas on Christmas Day and Boxing Day 2023, Defence accepted a request for assistance from the Queensland Government with clearing access to essential infrastructure to ensure timely restoration of essential services.
