Premier’s Message – March 2020

Welcome to the March edition of Veterans SA E-News.

On the 12th of March, I was pleased to announce with the Minister for Health that the reactivation of the Repat reached a landmark milestone with the completion and imminent opening of the first facility on the site.

Works have been completed on C-Block to provide a fit-for-purpose home for the Southern Adelaide Older Persons Mental Health Team as they provide specialised care for consumers with mental illness living in the community.

The newly refurbished C-Block is a major step towards returning the Repat to a thriving health precinct, a significant step in the delivery of the Government’s plan to revitalise the historic site.

We are delivering on our commitment to deliver a thriving medical precinct at the Repat site, and the revitalised site will provide a significant boost to the state’s health system.

The Government knows that the local community have a long-standing passion and connection for the Repat, and these upgrades will ensure the site continues to help families through difficult times and provide best practice care for years to come.

Furthermore, the 31st of March 2020, marks the 99th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).

With a long and distinguished history of service the establishment of an Australian air force resulted from the Imperial Conference held in London in 1911, when the British Empire encouraged nations of the Commonwealth to develop their own aviation forces.

In 1945, Australia had the fourth-largest air force in the world behind USA, USSR and the UK.  Over 215,000 Australian men and women served between 1939 and 1945. Of these 9,870 RAAF personnel lost their lives. Over 55 per cent of these deaths occurred in the air war against Germany over Europe.

As their Centenary year approaches, I look forward to learning more about how the RAAF has developed over the last 100 years and am looking forward to the RAAF Centenary Celebration events in 2021.

On behalf of all South Australians, thank you for your service.
