A unique mentoring program, dedicated to supporting veterans and their partners to navigate the career transition and business entrepreneurship, has celebrated another successful year in South Australia.

The Veterans SA Career and Business Mentoring Program, now in its second year, has provided a vital pathway for both current and former Australian Defence Force (ADF) members, Reservists, and Defence partners to achieve their professional aspirations.

Seventeen individuals from the veteran community were strategically paired with South Australian business leaders, fostering a mentorship that aimed to unlock potential, build confidence, and support career and business development goals. This year’s program marked a significant milestone by including three Defence partners, recognising the importance of supporting entire Defence families.

The program’s success is reflected in its diverse mentor pool, including professionals from various backgrounds, including strategy and consulting, academia, and small business. The inclusion of former-serving ADF members among the mentors also demonstrates a commitment to giving back to the veteran community.

Under the guidance of South Australian-based Strategy and Business Coach, Christine Molitor from Be Sustained, participants engaged in a six-month program focused on career planning, skill translation, and business networking. The 2023 program also introduced two distinct program streams – Career and Skills Development, and Business Development and Entrepreneurship – providing tailored support based on individual needs and aspirations.

Veterans SA Director, Chantelle Bohan, said the program’s success was underpinned by its ability to address the unique needs of ADF members and their partners.

“Each year, the Career and Business Mentoring Program is carefully designed to support the needs of the participants to develop new skills and prepare for future careers and ventures post-service,“ said Ms Bohan.

“It has been fantastic to see another group of highly skilled and experienced individuals benefit from the program this year.”

The success of this year’s program follows a highly successful pilot in 2021, where four veterans secured employment, scholarship, and public speaking opportunities, further underscored the program’s efficacy.

Be Sustained CEO, Christine Molitor, celebrated the program’s continuing role in fostering a supportive, professional community that empowers veterans to embark on or enhance their careers and businesses.

“The connections formed, and lessons learned during the six-month program are expected to have a lasting impact on the professional and social trajectories of the participants, contributing to improved long-term employment outcomes,” said Ms Molitor.

The program concluded at a dynamic event that included a workshop facilitated by Mindset Coach, David Steventon, about changing mindset and discovering self-worth. The workshop was followed by a valuable opportunity for participants to network with program alumni and other South Australian professionals.
