I see myself as a future industry leader in defence, and the networks I build through DILP will open up new opportunities for personal and more importantly, industry growth.
A South Australian veteran is stepping into a new chapter in leadership after being selected to receive an inaugural scholarship to take part in the sector-leading 2026 Defence Industry Leadership Program (DILP).
Co-funded by Veterans SA and the Defence Teaming Centre (DTC), the veteran scholarship was launched as a pilot this year. The opportunity was established to support veterans to build meaningful careers and leadership pathways within Australia’s growing defence industry.
As part of the 2026 pilot, two veterans were awarded the scholarship to undertake the nine-month DILP – a flagship course delivered by DTC that builds strategic leadership, collaboration and innovation capability within South Australia’s defence sector.
From military service to industry leadership
For one of the scholarship recipients, Ross Neuwirth-Tindale, the opportunity to participate in the program comes at a pivotal point in his transition from military service to the civilian workforce.
“I wanted to participate in DILP for two reasons, professional development – as I’m about 18 months out of uniform – and to extend my network and understand what the rest of the industry is doing,” he said.
Ross said the program also provides an opportunity to strengthen leadership capability in a new context.
“I also wanted to develop stronger leadership skills, particularly the ability to influence upwards around strategy and managing commercial risk,” he said.
Building connections that matter
Having spent much of his career in uniform, Ross highlighted that one of the most valuable aspects of the program will be the relationships built throughout the journey.
“As a veteran who’s spent most of my career in uniform, the opportunity to engage with industry face-to-face and peer-to-peer is really exciting,” he said.
“I see myself as a future industry leader in defence, and the networks I build through DILP will open up new opportunities for personal and more importantly, industry growth.”
Investing in the future defence workforce
The Defence Teaming Centre’s Defence Industry Leadership Program has supported more than 400 graduates since its establishment in 2010. It is widely regarded as a key pathway for emerging leaders in the sector, with participants graduating with a nationally recognised Diploma of Leadership and Management.
By joining forces with DTC to deliver the scholarship, Veterans SA is reinforcing its commitment to supporting pathways for veterans to continue contributing to the state’s defence sector and broader economic prosperity.
“Veterans SA is committed to supporting veterans beyond their service in uniform, creating and opening up pathways for them to apply their skills and experience in industries critical to the state’s future,” said Veterans SA Director Bianca Wheeler.
“By investing in leadership development and removing real or perceived barriers, this initiative is helping veterans play a key role in strengthening South Australia’s defence capability and workforce.”
